Unani is a system of alternative treatment, which is widely accepted in most of the Asian countries, especially, in India. Unani treatment is based on four elements, which are Black Bile or Sauda, Yellow Bile or Safra, Plegm or Balgham and Blood or Dam. There are two Unani colleges in Kolkata, which give the medical students a chance to study this ancient form of treatment.

Unani is very closely related to Ayurveda in its methods of treatment and basis. The most important element used in making medicines in Unani medicines is honey. Honey has been accepted as having the powers to heal a number of ailments like common cold sore throat, indigestion, diabetics. Honey is also very effective for clearing the bowels and blood circulation.

Hakim Iba Sina was responsible for developing the Unani medicine as a form of alternative treatment. He was however, influenced by the systems of medicine followed in Islam and also by the people of Greece and India.
